Reinvigorated Maplin Electronics’ online presence with a new eCommerce site

The Objectives

  • Double the range of products sold online
  • Provide flexible omni-channel touch-points
  • Deliver an eCommerce platform suited for future international growth
  • Provide Maplin Electronics’ customers with flexible options at checkout, including Reserve & Collect, Pay & Collect, and same-day delivery slots.
  • Integration to over 20 merchandising and back-office systems to improve sales and site operations.
  • Deliver to market within six months prior to the 2013 peak Christmas trading period

The Strategy

  • We conducted an in-depth consulting and platform evaluation programme, including reviewing the existing technical landscape of Maplin Electronics.
  • We delivered a new solution on the hybris platform that included all relevant commerce features, channel touch-points and back-end integrations.
  • We also created a brand new front-end design for both desktop and mobile specific channels.
  • The site launched within 8 months, with integration to over 30 systems and 100+ APIs.

The Results

  • 50% uplift in conversion
  • 45% increase in traffic
  • 33% increase in revenue
  • £6.5m generated in sales through Click and Collect
  • 2014 yielded the best company results in 7 years
  • 100% increase in products available online
  • Stock keeping unit (SKUs) increased from 15,000 to 30,000

 

In February 2018, Maplin Electronics became one of a number of well-known, UK retailers to collapse due to the perfect storm created by changing customer behaviour, increased business costs and a weak pound.
