Over the last six years, the start of each year has been marked by Google announcing that it’ll be ‘the year of mobile’. In the early years this was hard to believe as traffic was lower and conversions were non-existent. But 2013 marked a transition period as searches started shifting from desktop to mobile by at least 30%. A new era began in 2015 when mobile searches outgrew desktop searches for the first time, and now that we’re also seeing conversions follow, it’s time for marketers to pay serious attention to mobile as a channel.

There’s no getting away from it - mobile plays a fundamental part in supporting business growth today, and it’s clear the pressure really is on for businesses to provide consumers with a seamless experience in a mobile-first world. For anyone who has watched (or attended) the Google Performance Summit, held in May of this year in San Francisco, it’s evident that Google is shifting to mobile. Google is releasing different solutions to make mobile strategy more efficient for advertisers in the form of better visibility with expanded text ads, responsive display ads and more accurate bids across devices. Google is also rolling out new Local Search Ads on Maps to empower online to offline strategy.

SEO loves its tropes; if we’re not insisting for the thousandth time that 'content is king’, we’re predicting that next year really will be ‘the year of mobile’. We’ve become so accustomed to heralding in each new year with this particular forecast that it feels a bit strange to be calling an end to the tradition. But do so I must, because here’s the thing – I think The Year of Mobile just happened.

The latest data from Greenlight shows that in the lead up to Christmas, a total of 12 million searches were made on Google UK for Brown Goods and Amazon, which in August was the most visible site to these searches, was knocked off its perch by none other than Apple!
