Google's battle with Microsoft has dominated the search news headlines this month as the two tech giants vied to secure a stake in social networking site, Facebook. The tussle was won by Microsoft who parted with a cool (and somewhat over inflated) $240m for a 1.6% stake in the company. The deal will see Microsoft become the exclusive third-party ad platform partner for Facebook allowing them to sell ads internationally.

Google’s new privacy policy confirms CTR use in algorithm

Scheduled to come into effect on March 1, Google’s much publicised new Privacy Policy and terms, which it says will give users better search results, ads and improve their experience overall, have come under scrutiny from the European Union’s (EU) data protection authorities. They have asked for rollout to be delayed in order to fully verify the terms are not in breach of EU data protection laws.

SEO doesn't exist in a vacuum. You are not optimising your site, you are optimising it against somebody else, principally the people that already occupy the coveted page 1 space....and they are there in that space, because they have achieved the highest level of relevance.
