It's accepted wisdom in SEO that rankings will fluctuate, sometimes by a little, and sometimes by a lot. There are far too many variables at play for this not to be the case, but have you ever wondered exactly how much rankings fluctuate in any given day? We have, so recently we decided to do a little test. At Greenlight we already rank check an eye popping number of keywords on a pretty regular basis, but for this test we decided to up the ante. We took 1,000 keywords and recorded the top 100 ranking sites for those keywords 10-15 times over the course of a single 24 hour period. “16% of all search queries that happen on Google every day have never been searched for before”, so says Google. A bit of a shocking statement, one which stokes the idea that no matter how comprehensive your AdWords accounts, you will always continue to miss vital search terms. Google followed this up with the launch of its new feature for Adwords, ‘Dynamic Search Ads,’ which would appear to be a step in the right direction towards uncovering some of these search terms.

Earlier this month, Google announced on its official blog (adwords.blogspot.com) that the ad quality would soon be changing to give the landing page more weighting when determining the Quality Score and Ad Rank i.e. ads with landing pages Google deems to be most relevant to a respective search query, will be able to rank higher for lower cost-per-click (CPC) bids. In August, the changes were tested in Brazil, Spain, Portugal and Spanish-speaking Latin America.

The UK market for online fashion is expected to be worth £4.8bn by the end of 2011, according to market analyst Mintel. However, going by the latest independent analysis of online fashion-related search data, undertaken by Greenlight, menswear has quite some ground to make up. Greenlight's latest report 'Fashion - Issue 10', reveals that of the 1.1 million fashion-related searches conducted on Google UK in July, almost 50 per cent of terms related to womenswear compared to just 16 per cent for menswear.
