One year ago I released the first version of our History of SEO infographic. This 2 page graphic was intended to collate various sources of historical SEO information about the search engines and the SEO industry into one easily digestible "cheat sheet", and since then many people have been asking if I'll be updating the History of SEO to include what happened in 2010. The answer, you'll be pleased to know, is "yes". Changes and additions include: a ranking factors chart and events timeline updated to include 2010; "Whatever happened to...?", the fate of 90's search engines such as Lycos and Excite; and more random facts for your entertainment. This years version is very long (and I mean that literally)....

Earlier this month I wrote as part of our 2011 SEO predictions about how search engines were likely to take an even more aggressive stance towards duplicate and low value content this year. On Friday Matt Cutts announced an algorithm update that does just that. The update, which somewhat unusually for a Google algorithm change doesn't yet appear to have been christened with a catchy moniker, tightens duplicate content filters and tries to make a better job of identifying the original source of duplicate material.

Though not a particularly new initiative, Google’s “Session Based Clicks” (SBC), have recently come under fire. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, a number of online advertisers have seen the cost of their Adwords expenditure increase at the same time as wasted, irrelevant clicks – some say up to 10%, as a result of Google’s SBC algorithm. SBC should not cause an advertiser any real inflation in costs and wasted clicks. It can help online advertisers identify new opportunities as well as incremental sales and enquiries.
