One year ago I released the first version of our History of SEO infographic. This 2 page graphic was intended to collate various sources of historical SEO information about the search engines and the SEO industry into one easily digestible "cheat sheet", and since then many people have been asking if I'll be updating the History of SEO to include what happened in 2010. The answer, you'll be pleased to know, is "yes". Changes and additions include: a ranking factors chart and events timeline updated to include 2010; "Whatever happened to...?", the fate of 90's search engines such as Lycos and Excite; and more random facts for your entertainment. This years version is very long (and I mean that literally)....

Earlier this month I wrote as part of our 2011 SEO predictions about how search engines were likely to take an even more aggressive stance towards duplicate and low value content this year. On Friday Matt Cutts announced an algorithm update that does just that. The update, which somewhat unusually for a Google algorithm change doesn't yet appear to have been christened with a catchy moniker, tightens duplicate content filters and tries to make a better job of identifying the original source of duplicate material.

What’s in store for natural search in 2011? Among other things, we are predicting Google and Bing will offer app search before the year is out, competition between Bing and Google will hot up and duplication filters will get even tougher as the search engines take more drastic measures to limit the amount of resource they spend on less valuable content and maximise the focus on everything else.

So, having stuck my neck out and confidently predicted that Google's test of "streaming search" (now apparently called "Google Instant") would be a short lived one, I'm now going to concede I was wrong as Google do in fact seem to be taking the service out of limited Beta testing and taking it live for all logged in users who choose to try it.
